Terrain
Rosemont, Illinois
Elyn Zimmerman, 1987
Photographed for The Cultural Landscape Foundation

Designed by artist Elyn Zimmerman in 1987, Terrain sits within an office complex in Rosemont. The installation brings together boulders, water, and vegetation to reference the glacial history that shaped the Great Lakes. Across the gridded plaza, the boulders represent glacial erratics, stones carried and left behind by moving ice. What stood out to me while photographing the site was how their placement feels irregular but never random. The arrangement continues into the surrounding gardens, making the whole landscape feel composed without being symmetrical.
